Things change quickly in football: Not long ago was Alexis Sanchez tipped to become the next Cristiano Ronaldo for Arsenal, well he looks set to leave the club for greener pastures in this summer transfer window.
After failing to become a regular starter or gra’sping the ‘main man berth’ he wanted at Barcelona, Alexis Sanchez opted to join Arsenal On 10 July 2014.
“So happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London” a happy Sanchez said on his unveiling day.
“Sanchez has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad.” Arsene Wenger, the man who paid £31.7 million for his services quipped.
In his debut season, Sanchez scored 25 goals and helped the gunners win the 2015 FA Cup.
He was also influential the following season; producing scintillating performances, registering 17 goals and finally earning that ‘main man berth’ he always dreamed of.
Last season though, things didn’t quite go according to plan as the customs at the Emirates.
Though Arsenal won a record 7th FA Cup under manager Arsene Wenger, they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1996, settling for the rather disdained Europa League.
And that is the problem.
Alexis Sanchez has publicly expressed his desire to win the Champions League. Who doesn’t want to win the Champions League?
According to media reports, Manchester City are favourites to sign Sanchez should he decide to leave Arsenal, considering the Chilean and City boss Guardiola once worked together at Barcelona.
The big question pops up though: are Manchester City a better prospect to win the Champions League than Arsenal? Probably.
However, Manchester City don’t look like a team buoyed with the intensity to win the Champions League yet.
Amid Guardiola’s lavish spending defensively in the transfer market, his team still have a lot to prove after a average display last season and the Premier League is a realistic chance of a silverware for Manchester Ciy over the Champions League that has many ardent suitors including the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Sanchez will also struggle to be the ‘main man’ at Man City, with Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and even Gabriel Jesus all vying for that tag.
However at Arsenal, Sanchez is a free man. With new signing Alexandre Lacazette joining the fray from Lyon, the gunners are serious candidates for the Premier League race next season- a trophy Alexis is yet to win.
If they do, Arsenal will be in the next Champions League in 2019 and he can finally cajole, hector to win it.
